Excursions of Cava Misericordia - PURA VIDA BAROCCA

The "Cava della Misericordia" is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled quarries in the Hyblean territory; characterized by unique botanical and geological peculiarities and by ancient mule tracks that make it a completely new "canyon" in the local landscape.

The vegetation is characterized not only by the pine forest but also by bagolari, willows, plane trees, poplars and oaks, pomegranates, figs, walnuts, carob trees, almond trees, lotuses and citrus fruits, which testify to human intervention, in the past, in the area such as the "Park of the Mills ".

During the walk it is possible to collect useful and edible herbs such as asparagus ("sparici") and to taste some asphodel also called "matalufo" or "wild prisella" or the spontaneous pea plant, there is also wild fennel and seeds , the caper, the water mint and the oregano.

Depending on the season, you can also taste the prickly pears ("ficu pali"), figs, walnuts, almonds and carobs.The fauna is characterized by wild rabbits, porcupines, porcupines, peregrine falcons, buzzards, kestrels, foxes and numerous varieties of reptiles including the rare leopard colubro.There are also caves including the most important "the Giant's cave".
