Ragusa superiore: places not to be missed

Cattedrale di San Giovanni
1 - Cathedral of San Giovanni
The Cathedral of San Giovanni was built starting from 1694 on the plateau where the new Ragusa was born, the ancient church of S. Giovanni actually stood in Ibla, where today is the church of S. Agnese. In 1718 the expansion works began for the construction of a larger temple and it was solemnly consecrated in 1778. The temple, which rests on a large terrace bordered by balustrades and supported by arches, has a central body prospectus made in two orders and delimited at the end by two bell towers, of which only the one on the left was built. The first order, finely decorated, is divided into five bays by Corinthian semi-columns on high bases and there are three portals of which the main one, in a central position, is dominated by a niche containing the statue of the Madonna, flanked by the statues of San Giovanni Battista and St. John the Evangelist.
In correspondence with the bases of the bell towers, ashlar pilasters typical of the monuments of the Acese and Catania area have been inserted, thus denouncing the execution entrusted to two master builders from Acireale. The second order, of reduced dimensions, is marked by simple pilasters thus contrasting in height and decoration with the first; note two sundials dated 1751.
The interior of the temple is a Latin cross with three naves, originally it had an interesting scenographic effect which contrasted the dark pitch stone, used for capitals and wainscot, with the whiteness of the stuccos. Unfortunately interventions of the last century have canceled this characteristic. Of notable interest are the capitals richly sculpted by the master builder Carmelo Cultraro and the fine gilded rococo style stuccoes present in the vaults of the naves and of the presbytery and in the walls of the transepts created between 1776 and 1777. In the walls of the transepts large niches surrounded from statues On the left the theological Virtues (Faith, Hope and Charity) frame the Crucifixion; on the right, the statues of the Eternal Father adored by the angels surround an 18th century canvas depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds. At the intersection of the transept with the central nave, in 1783, the dome was raised and in 1848 the characteristic flooring was built, made up of pitch stone slabs with white limestone inlays. Also noteworthy is the valuable "Serassi" organ built in 1848, and the carved and gilded wooden choir loft, now located above the main door.
